How the interest works
Advance tax is payable when tax after TDS and TCS is ₹10,000 or more: 15% by 15 June, 45% by 15 September, 75% by 15 December and 100% by 15 March. Presumptive taxpayers pay it all by 15 March. Interest is 1% for every month or part of a month, on the shortfall rounded down to the nearest ₹100.
Deferment (234C): 1% a month for 3 months on each June, September and December shortfall, and 1 month for March. No interest if at least 12% is paid by June and 36% by September. Short payment (234B): if advance tax paid by 31 March is less than 90% of the tax, 1% a month from 1 April until the tax is paid. Late return (234A): 1% a month on tax still unpaid, from the day after the due date until the return is filed.
